I once heard someone say humans are like onions – one needs to peel off layers, both good and bad, to see what’s truly inside. The celebrated crêpe, on the other hand, is several layers of flavoursome goodness. Mamas, read on and your quest for that perfect crêpe ends here!

Brunch destinations in Singapore abound, so when something out of the ordinary sprouts up, I’m all ears! Marie-Charlotte and Antoine, the duo behind the popular French wine bar and bistro, Ô Batignolles opened their second outlet Ô Comptoir (previously called Le Comptoir) in May 2014 in the vibrant Boat Quay area. Ô Comptoir specializes in sweet and savoury galettes (made from buckwheat flour) and crêpes (made from wheat flour) and also dishes out various egg concoctions.

We tried the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and the delicious scones before the pièce de résistance crêpes. The English Breakfast Crêpe of bacon, eggs, tomatoes, beans, mushrooms and sausages was a hearty portion which could easily be shared if ordered with a few accompaniments.

There are various other savoury crêpes on the menu, from the classic Emmental cheese and ham crêpe to the “Chase the Spices” crêpe featuring masala chicken, ginger, onions, peanuts, chillis, tomatoes and cheese. My absolute favourite, however, was the melt-in-your mouth “Normandy Landing”: a wheat flour sweet treat made with homemade salted butter caramel. The “Chocolate Rendezvous” Nutella Crêpe is also a naturally popular pick.

For those who love their breakfast foods (and good value), I’d go for the full set brunch (at $32++ per person), including two hot beverages, one fresh orange juice, one sweet treat and, best of all, one “make your own”crêpe or galette with a choice of filling. Magnifique!

We’re also big fans of Ô Comptoir’s mama-friendly Wednesday evenings that are all about Rosé and Bubbly at unbeatable prices. If ladies come together in a group of four, a free bottle of Provence Rosé wine (worth $40) awaits from 7-9 pm. Wines, ciders, crêpes, tapas, a live DJ, and a kitchen that stays open until 11.30pm: what’s not to like?

Whether for brunch or a ladies’ night out, Ô Comptoir will transport you straight to France (specifically Brittany, the land of galettes!).
