Add Ash & Elm at the InterContinental Singapore to your brunch list, mama! This isn’t any old staid hotel buffet, it’s a lively and convivial spread that’s a bit more casual, perfect for families and large groups, and enticing for any foodie. I fancy myself a bit of a connoisseur when it comes to brunch in Singapore, and thought this was one of the best brunch buffets I’d had in quite a while.
I stopped by on a recent Sunday with my husband and 2-year-old in tow. He loved the make-your-own Bloody Mary bar (included in the standard $98++ menu). I went gaga for the sumptuous Caviar station (even the blinis were drop-dead delicious!). And the toddler loved the dedicated children’s play area, which included blocks, a soft mat, a Disney video and even a nice colouring station. It goes without saying that the food was all delicious.
Newly-refurbished, Ash & Elm features an open-plan concept that combines elegant hand-cut polished crystal pendant chandeliers with natural materials like butcher-block worktops, timber walls and mosaic-tiles in the flooring. Seating is in plush leather banquettes with copper partitions between tables to emulate “the bark of an old oak tree”. The result is a relaxed and stylish space that you’re apt to completely forget is in a hotel in the middle of the city.
I think value is really what sets this buffet apart, mamas. In addition to the aforementioned Caviar bar, you’ll also find an impressive walk-in Charcuterie and Cheese Room (whose Sunday wouldn’t be improved by a few slices of Iberico ham?!) and a fresh seafood bar with your requisite oysters, lobsters, poached live prawns and Alaskan King Crab.
I was equally impressed by the nice selection of pre-made appetizers on display, including mini-Beef Tartare (we may have gone back for thirds or fourths on those) and stylish Caprese salad shooters (replete with a little injection of Balsamic vinegar).
This buffet definitely skews more toward savoury lunch fare than lots of breakfast options, but there is a nice Egg station serving up brunch staples like Eggs Benedict and Eggs Cocotte (piping hot and super fresh, I might add). I was told eggs could also be made to order but when I asked a chef if he cold make me an omelette he directed me toward the pre-prepared dishes, so I’m not sure if that’s a wrinkle still being sorted or what.
No matter, there was plenty more to choose from, including a carving station with favourites like roast beef and Slow Baked Norwegian Salmon Fillet (totally delicious). On top of all this, there’s also an impressive menu where you can order unlimited amounts of dishes like Chargrilled Iberico Pork Loin, Confit Duck Leg, and Boston Lobster Risotto prepard a la minute. I liked that these portions weren’t too huge (the lobster risotto was just perfect for my foodie toddler, for example), allowing for lots of exploratory tasting!
Ash & Elm also has one of the best dessert selections that I’ve seen, including a chocolate fondue fountain, ice creams, fruits, and a lovely assortment of cakes and other confections. The Cherry Bread and Butter Pudding was our family favourite (shocking since I’m usually a chocolate girl – but it was just that yummy).
Of course, this wouldn’t really be brunch in Singapore if there wasn’t a free-flow Champagne option, and I’m happy to report that Ash & Elm delivers on this front as well, proferring up Perrier Jouet Champagne (how did they know it was one of my favourites?) to go along with wines and beers at $138++. The staff was impressively attentive and generous with the bubbles (always appreciated), and they were exceedingly kind and patient with my toddler to boot!
All in all it made for a fabulous start to our Sunday, and I look forward to going back with friends soon!
Sunday brunch at Ash & Elm runs from 12 noon to 3pm. For $98++ guests receive all food along with free-flow juices, soft drinks, and D.I.Y. Bloody Mary Cocktails. For $138++ guests also receive free-flow Perrier-Jouet Champagne and select beers and wines.
