Driving your own car in Singapore makes life a million times easier when you’ve got kids. You don’t have to lug around car seats, you’re not at the mercy of the taxi gods when it’s raining, and you have the freedom to explore Singapore’s beautiful parks and nature reserves that aren’t easily accessible by public transport.
If you’ve got two or more kids (or find yourself lugging around lots of stuff), a 7-seater SUV (sport utility vehicle) or MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) makes for a fab family car. With optional third rows, which often fold down for extra cargo space, 7-seaters ensure that you still have space to carry passengers even if you’ve got two or more car seats living in the middle row. We also like the vantage point that a taller vehicle provides when driving.
Prices vary widely on 7-seater SUVs in Singapore, and are in part dependant upon COE (also bear in mind that big SUVs can fall into the more expensive Category B). On the other hand, if you buy a used car, you generally pay for a pro-rated portion of whatever the COE was on your new car (you’re not paying current COE rates). Leasing is also a great option if you want to avoid up-front fees, or if you don’t want to deal with the headaches of sorting out your own repairs.

Handling more like a sporty hatchback than an SUV, the 7-seater ŠKODA KODIAQ is the ideal workhorse for families: the third row has ample space for kids and passenger comfort is paramount with features like adaptive cruise control, an auto-hold function, a hands-free tailgate (you can tap with your foot to open the boot!), memory seats, and park assist. It’s also got heaps of cargo room – 2,500 litres, to be precise – with fold-down seats in the second and third rows. In fact you’ve got 630 litres of space for groceries, sports gear and school bags with only the third row folded down! In addition to its easy handling and safety features (nine airbags in all!), everything about the KODIAQ seems to have been designed with families in mind. Well-priced and versatile, the Volkswagen Sharan is a 7-seater MPV with seven individually adjustable seats, including an ‘Easy Entry’ feature that makes it easier than you’d expect to reach that back row! On those occasions when you need more cargo space, the ‘EasyFold’ feature allows the seats in both the second and third row to fold flat with a simple one-handed action.
