FBB_DCGWe’re always on the hunt for great places to meet up with mama buddies and bring the kiddos but still be able to have, you know, a proper conversation… One that isn’t interrupted by us having to yell, “No, don’t touch that!” or “STOP it!”. Good coffee is also a plus, and if we also found ourselves somewhere with delicious cakes rather than stale croissants or over-processed muffins, we might think we’d died and gone to café heaven. Well, thankfully, heaven is right here in the foothills of Fort Canning Park, at The Fabulous Baker Boy.

photo (6)This charming little outdoor café (don’t worry, it’s shaded and there are fans to stir the air a bit) is perfect to head to with scooters and stroller so that the littles can wear themselves out in the park and mama can reward herself with a little something sweet. There’s plenty of open space between the tables if you’ve got toddlers, and as it’s totally open on one side kids can hurl themselves down the grassy slope in front and remain in full view, hopefully without you needing to leave your seat. On a side note — we just heard the best parenting tip, “French mamas don’t get up unless there’s blood”. Isn’t that a great mantra for mums to live by?

The decor at The Fabulous Baker Boy is super-cute. There’s a great “Calm Down & Eat Cake” mural on one of the walls, and a great mix of furniture, including some amazing pink neon chairs and tables. There’s also a gorgeous art gallery next door called Viridian Art House which didn’t have an exhibition on when we visited, but which runs workshops for kids at the weekends which definitely look worth checking out.

yumSo now let’s talk about those cakes. Well, we sampled the Caribbean Lemon Slice and it was amazing. Moist, crumbly, packed with lemony sweetness with the most delicious coconut icing ever. The other options looked just as fab, and you can buy them by the slice or order an entire cake for a birthday party (they even do vegan options!). And just who is the Fabulous Baker Boy? Well, he’s owner Juwanda, who we’ve snapped at a rare moment out of the kitchen.

bakerboyIt isn’t just cakes that they do either; they also have a (smallish) menu of other offerings like pasta, salads and brunch staples like pancakes and eggs at the weekends. They only open at 11am on weekdays, but at 10.30am on weekends so it’s a great casual brunch option if you’re in the River Valley area.
