Whether you’re after a safari or gorgeous, uncrowded beaches, put Sri Lanka on your travel list, mama!

If you’ve been to Bali and tried Thailand, get ready to visit one of the region’s most up-and-coming family travel destinations, mama: Sri Lanka! Less than four hours away from Singapore by air (with daily direct flights to the capital, Colombo, available on multiple airlines), Sri Lanka offers a stunning combination of world class beaches, delicious cuisine, and incredible safaris and animal experiences.

Nature & Wildlife

Do your kiddos love animals? Are you keen to spend your family holiday getting loads of fresh air? Sri Lanka is the perfect spot, mama!

There’s whale and dolphin watching at Mirissa Beach (key season is November to April, i.e. right now!); elephants, water buffalo and water birds at Udawalawe National Park; and leopards, sloth bears and crocodiles (oh my!) when you take a safari tour at Yala National Park.

Beach Lovers

Weligama on the South Coast is fast becoming one of Sri Lanka’s most popular resort destinations. Not only is it popular with novice surfers, but it’s also where you’ll find Sri Lanka’s famous stilt fishermen in the water.

Galle, which is about a 2-hour drive from Colombo, is famous for its 16th century fort, historic architecture, and stylish blend of cafes, boutiques, and hip hotels. It’s also convenient for day trips to Udawalawe National Park or whale watching tours.

A bit further up the coast, head to Kosgoda to check out the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project, where you can see adorable baby hatchlings released into the sea, and learn more about efforts to protect endangered sea turtles.

Where to Stay

We’re hearing good things about the 5-star Hotel Riu Sri Lanka in Ahungalla, a new all-inclusive, 24-hour service hotel just two hours from Colombo. With all food and beverage included, along with entertainment programmes for kids and adults alike, live music and shows, and a variety of gym and fitness activities, this beachfront hotel is the perfect spot for a hassle-free holiday, mama.

The Kids’ Pool at Riu Hotel Sri Lanka

You’ll also find three swimming pools – including a kids’ pool with a water slide (score!) – and a dedicated kids’ club for children ages 4 to 12. Add in that the resort is just a short drive from the Sea Turtle Conservation Project, and an easy day trip to Udawalawe National Park, and you’ll be pleased as punch with your easy, breezy holiday. And perhaps we’ll just say it again: all food AND beverage is included!
