GESS – International School doesn’t just prioritise educational excellence in the classroom; they’re also helping students get an insight into STEM careers with internships, industry talks, mentorship and career guidance!

“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

That’s a question every mama asks her children, but how do our youth really know what’s involved in a career without the right doors opening to get a proper insight? Not-for-profit GESS – International School is going the extra mile to help children build a strong foundation to achieve their career goals with their newly launched BeyondClassrooms programme to offer students internship opportunities, industry talks, mentorship paths, site visits and career guidance!

GESS BeyondClassrooms – Volocopter

Keeping up with an evolving industry

The BeyondClassrooms Programme is a partnership between GESS and some of the world’s best companies and professionals in the STEM fields including several world-renowned manufacturers of automobiles and motorcycles such as BMW Group Asia; Germany-based urban air mobility pioneer, Volocopter; global sustainable technology experts Danfoss; BluCurrent, a company specialising in AI-driven fish farms; leading speciality chemicals company Evonik and more.

It serves as a solid extension of the school’s existing STEM offerings while complementing GESS’ Junior Engineering Academy – an engineering programme for 13- and 14-year-old students that provides training in engineering modules. In essence, BeyondClassrooms provides students who are interested in pursuing future careers in STEM with networking opportunities and career guidance whilst also building their CV and profile for university applications.

When asked why the school created this consolidated programme, the principal of GESS, Mr. Stefan Pauli said, “All our students are living in a world that is growing so quickly on the science, technology and engineering fronts and we want our students to not be spectators but participants in this advancement. We want to connect them with industries, professionals and frontrunners of these important fields and learn beyond the limits of a classroom.”

Mentorship, mock interviews & internship opportunities

Through the BeyondClassroom programme, GESS students aged 11 to 18 will have access to new internship opportunities, industry lectures, mentorship paths, site visits and career guidance.

The programme has been well-received by students to date, as GESS has already hosted multiple industry talks throughout the programme’s beta phase. Students were excited to listen to a professor from TUM Asia speak about “Intelligent Robots and Social Engineering Models”, while one of Danfoss’ general managers delivered talks about sustainability and mobility-related technology. Professionals from BMW Group Asia have also conducted career-sharing sessions and mock interviews with students – one of the elements of the school’s career guidance programme.

“GESS’ goal is for every child to reach his or her potential. Achieving that goal requires not only excellent teachers and programmes within the school but also collaboration with parents and outside experts who can provide challenging, authentic and relevant opportunities for learning. The best schools engage in partnerships with their community and GESS aims to be among the best schools,” remarked Joram Hutchins, Academic Director of GESS.
