A Fun Time for the Family at Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre Extravaganza 2019!

The Cultural Extravaganza 2019 returns for its 3rd edition, and invites all to discover Singapore’s evolving and contemporary Chinese culture in our everyday life. Presented by the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre, come and uncover the heritage behind our daily cup of kopi, learn about how Chinese wedding traditions have evolved across generations, get to know Singapore’s thriving Chinese comic market, or even pick up a circus trick or two from a local community circus.

Clay Exploration Sat 25 & Sun 26 May, 3 – 4pm & 4.15 – 5.15pm, Sat 1 & Sun 2 June, 2 – 3pm

Learn how to create beautiful clay art pieces to reflect our Chinese culture. Get a chance to design a cheongsam, longevity bun or a baby full-moon gift package, and see your miniature artwork come to life. Parents can also accompany their children in this workshop, evoking their interest in Chinese culture and learning through play.

Colourfully Peranakan – Tile Colouring Workshop Sat 25 May, 11 – 11.30am, 2 – 2.30pm & 4 – 4.30pm

What can be more colourful than the heritage tiles often found in Peranakan shophouses? Through this tile colouring workshop by The Intan, participants will get an in-depth understanding of the different types of tiles and motifs used by the Peranakans, with an opportunity to customise their very own tile to bring home as a souvenir.

What does a Hokkien glove puppet look like? Discover the disappearing art of traditional Chinese puppetry in this exhibition that traces the evolution of the Hokkien glove puppets.
* There will be puppetry performances on Sat 8 & Sun 9 June, 11am – 12.30pm.

Comic Draw for All Children Session: Sun 26 May, 11am – 1pm & 2.30 – 4.30pm

What is the connection between comic drawing and our culture? For the adults, learn how to transform biscuits into delightful characters through our hands-on sessions, while the younger ones can find out more about Singapore’s early builders through the drawing of our iconic Samsui women.

Chinese Percussion from Past to Present Sun 26 May, 1 – 2pm & 3.30 – 4.30pm

 Want to learn how to use percussion instruments to create animal sounds? Join us in this interactive workshop by Drum Feng as they share about the origin of Chinese percussion, and how traditional and modern instruments are used in their music-making.

Did you know that Singapore’s amusement parks used to have spectacular circus acts by local performing troupes? Watch them make a comeback as Singapore’s very own community circus Bornfire presents UNBOX – A circus production. It promises to be an exciting showcase of juggling acts, diabolo, cry wheel and more. Join in the fun and pick up a few basic circus acts to impress your friends!
