The kids are done with classes for the term, which means ‘Travel School’ is officially in session! Engaging with subjects like history, geography and culture doesn’t have to stop at the classroom door with many great ‘fun-ducational’ and alternative family travel getaways right on our doorstep.

Georgetown, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and beautiful, old city in Penang, is a great place to explore Peranakan culture. Get up close and personal with the Baba-Nyonya way of life by strolling through the Pinang Peranakan Mansion. Budding naturalists and mini master chefs will love the nearby Tropical Spice Garden, and kids of all ages will love riding the funicular tram to the top of nearby Penang Hill.
Phu Quoc, Vietnam
Sometimes what kids (including the grown up ones) need after a tough term is some time to unwind. White sand beaches, snorkelling and jungle trekking should do the trick! Now that direct flights from Singapore to Phu Quoc have launched, it’s never been easier to access all the natural beauty of this tropical Vietnamese island.
For families keen to escape the well-trodden tourist trail, Myanmar is the ideal destination to discover history, architecture, religion and nature. The Shwedagon Pagoda, a massive bell-shaped golden stupa and the most sacred Buddhist pagoda in Myanmar, is a sight inquisitive little ones will never forget.
Families with a sense of adventure will love Tamil Nadu’s bustling capital city, which is chock-a-block with religious history, churches and temples. Vietnam’s capital is steeped in history and culture. Keep the kids entertained at the Ethnology Museum where they can explore replicas of traditional ethnic houses. Kids also love Hanoi’s famous water puppet theatre shows, which recount Vietnamese folk legends.
In recent years, Laos has become a family-friendly destination full of relaxing river excursions and exciting adventure activities. Laos’ capital, Vientiane, is a relaxing retreat for families and its small town feel is perfect for family walks and bike rides. Older kids will enjoy exploring a bit more with jungle trekking, kayaking, zip-lining or climbing adventures in nearby Vang Vieng.
Bangkok isn’t always the first choice that comes to mind when planning a family holiday but the vibrant capital city is home to some top attractions for kids. Spend a morning visiting SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World, one of the largest aquariums in Southeast Asia, or take a boat ride down the Chao Phraya River and its many canals. The Ancient City, which is just a 45-minute drive out of the capital, takes you to another world where kids can explore vast temples.
