For the recent holiday weekend we found ourselves without any plans to leave Hong Kong, but that slight Island fever feeling that I find I get when I haven’t left Hong Kong for a few months. After spending some time browsing various super-expensive getaways online, we roped in another couple of friends with a little one too and decided to head off to Macau to the Four Seasons for a little break. Before I had my daughter I wouldn’t really have been too excited about a Macau trip, but even though the weather was a bit gloomy we couldn’t wait to get on the ferry and head for some time away!
Arriving at the Four Seasons in Macau was a bit of a bun fight, with so many people checking in at the same time, and long lines in front of reception. It seemed that we weren’t the only ones with the idea of leaving town, and it was quite amusing to see how the Hong Kongers and Mainlanders were dealing with the queuing to check in rather differently. The Hotel Manager was overseeing the process though and gave my daughter a little stuffed sheep which she was pretty thrilled with and started gumming away on it.
We had to wait for quite a while for our room to be ready, so in the end we got an upgrade to a suite. When we opened the doors to the room our jaws dropped – the suite was several times larger than our entire Hong Kong apartment, and ridiculously luxurious for just the three of us. The main living room included a full-sized dining table, entire lounge area and even a little kitchen which was perfect for setting up E’s bottles as it had a microwave for sterilizing too. As we’d requested, a cot was placed in our room, nicely made up, and we were delivered a little package of travel-sized Mustela goodies which was a nice baby-friendly touch. There was even a little juice box, yoghurt and cute biscuits laid out, though unfortunately these didn’t pass mama muster, containing enough sugar to have E buzzing off the walls for hours!
The pool area is ridiculously enormous and lovely, with about seven separate swimming pools sprawling over a huge area of land, with patches of grass, cabanas (complete with tvs) and a poolside restaurant, Splash. There’s even a great shallow kid’s pool which my friend’s little one had a fab time splashing about in. Unfortunately the day we had decided to dedicate to hanging out by the pool was a total wash-out with rain, so we decided to head to the Venetian for a wander around the shops. In the afternoon I headed to the Spa for a massage and was so impressed – the decor was gorgeous and I emerged feeling so much more relaxed after an hour. I’d definitely return for a proper spa day with girlfriends as it was one of the best massages I’ve ever had.
We ate both breakfast and lunch at the hotel in the main restaurant which is buffet-style which is always great with kids. Highchairs were offered when we arrived and the service was very pleasant even though the restaurant was busy. There was a great selection of Asian and Western options to keep even the fussiest of little eaters happy.
In general I’d definitely recommend the Four Seasons Macau for a getaway with the kids in the summer – the pool area is amazing and the spa is a great treat for mama! There were a few bumps in the service, but I think this was due to it being a busy holiday weekend, and it was nothing that didn’t get soothed away with the nice touches that are added.
The Four Seasons Macau is currently offering a Macau getaway package with rates from HK1,888 for a superior room per night including ferry tickets.
