The Dispensary: Hot new Tiong Bahru cafe

Tiong Bahru is one of our absolute fave Singapore neighbourhoods — there’s so much to explore, and we always recommend that visitors to Singapore head here first to get a feel for the “real Singapore”, stroll the streets, pop into the wet market and of course, treat themselves to coffee and a yummy goodie from one of the many fabulous cafes! We’ve definitely been guilty of playing favourites before (Tiong Bahru Bakery is our go-to way to start off a Sunday morning with the fam), but we’re happy to say it now has some serious competition from a new spot, The Dispensary, located just a 3 minute stroll away on Tiong Bahru Road.

With its setting in an old Chinese Medical Hall, The Dispensary is filled with local charm, just like the neighbourhood, with white-washed walls, a surprisingly spacious interior and a delicious selection of cakes, pastries and sandwiches, all made on-site. In fact, they even offer baking classes if you’re keen to brush up your skills! You can also pre-order cakes for birthday parties and other celebrations.

Open from 9am on Sunday mornings, it’s a great place to grab a cup of joe and hang out for a while with the kiddos (though just TRY getting away without giving them a cupcake — we warn you, you won’t be able to!) or order up a grilled cheese toastie. They also have free WIFI for all you working mamas who fancy a change of scene and want to set up with a laptop. Be warned though, like other businesses in the ‘hood, they’re closed on Mondays.

There’s nothing explicitly kid-friendly about them (apart from those mini-cupcakes we mentioned already) but what we’re loving is the spacious interior that’s perfect for a little mamas get-together and its quiet vibe. Once it’s discovered though, we can’t guarantee it will be quiet for long!
