Sir Manasseh Meyer International School (SMM) launched a new state-of-the-art campus this month, mama, but did you know that this non-profit, international Jewish school traces its Singapore roots back to 1996? From its outstanding, holistic academic program for children aged 18 months through Grade 8, to its amazing new facilities, here’s everything you need to know about SMM International School, mama!
Sir Manasseh Meyer (the road on the East Coast is named for him) was the most prominent Jewish figure in Singapore during his celebrated lifetime (1846-1930), not only supporting Singapore’s Jewish community, but also its educational institutions at large (he was a leading donor to both Raffles College and NUS). Even beyond Singapore, he worked with Albert Einstein to establish Hebrew University in Jerusalem – Einstein actually visited Singapore in 1922 to stay with Sir Meyer. His impressive educational legacy carried over to the founding of Ganenu (“Our Garden”) Learning Centre in 1996, which expanded in 2008 to become the Manasseh Meyer School.
Today, the school has a diverse student population spanning 21 different nationalities. It’s a small, close-knit community of around 200 students, with an amazing 1:6 teacher-student ratio in the early childhood years (and 1:15 in the lower and middle schools), but with its new campus will be expanding through to Grade 12 with a planned population of 500 students! The school welcomes students from all nationalities, though the values and ethics of Judaism are at the heart of the program: SMM International School wants students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the nature of knowledge by breaking down disciplinary walls and emphasising the interconnectedness of all knowledge.
SMM International School is small by design, helping every child reach his or her full potential through a combination of academic excellence, personal interaction, and all-around support. Starting with its warm, nurturing Early Childhood Center, through to its pre-collegiate American and UK curriculum that prepares students for IB, AP & A-Level exams, SMMIS places a strong emphasis on teaching excellence. Their rigorous program empowers students to become creative thinkers and risk takers that truly care about global society, mama!
