Sassy Scoop: Breathe Pilates – helping mamas improve their core strength!

If having a baby has wreaked havoc on your core strength (yep, that’s us!) and you’d love to restore your tummy muscles to their pre-baby condition, then you’ll want to head on over to Breathe Pilates! This one-of-a-kind boutique Pilates studio in Novena is home to a lovely team of qualified trainers who are ready to whip your mid-section back into shape (in the nicest way possible!).

Dr. Deborah Wong, a qualified medical doctor and avid dancer, is the lady in charge at Breathe Pilates, working with a hand-picked team of health care professionals. The speciality at Breathe Pilates is personalized Pilates classes focusing on rehabilitation and injury prevention, while building core strength and stamina – that means stronger abs for you mama!

Housed in a bright and airy studio in Novena Medical Centre, we were invited to try Breathe for ourselves and have to say we enjoyed every minute of it…

We popped along for a mid-week Reform & Be Released & Rebound session that saw us spend a busy hour stretching and breathing our way through a series of twists, stretches and strengthening exercises. Using a mix of Reformer and Tower equipment (might sound scary, but it really isn’t… it’s things like a Pulley Tower and a Jumping and Stretching Board) our friendly instructor gently guided us through a mildly challenging range of exercises. Nothing was too difficult to complete and while it wasn’t a sweaty workout like others we have done before, the sore muscles the next day proved just how targeted it was.

And what did we love the most about this class? We were particularly smitten with the small class numbers and the individual attention provided by our trainer. He was able to spot our diastasis recti straight away (separated stomach muscles) and provided exercises to help support this, while also providing stretches that addressed tight shoulders and hip flexors. As Pilates newbies we felt totally reassured in the knowledge we were getting a safe and effective workout exactly where we needed it most!

So as busy mamas who spend far too many hours hunched over the computer, or rushing around Singapore (often with heavy toddlers on hips) Breathe Pilates is the perfect solution to our exercise woes. Plus it’s the ideal way to focus in on your own health and wellbeing (and look fab in the process!).
