From learning to deal with failure to changing the world in ways both big and small, here’s why you want your kids coding
With school holidays just around the corner, it’s that time of year when mamas are desperately looking for fun ways to fill their kiddos’ days. Curious about coding? Coding isn’t just lines on a screen; from squishy dough circuits to building robot dinosaurs, coding truly epitomises fun, hands-on learning. It’s also a fab way to build grit and flex some imagination muscles.

Coding isn’t something you just learn overnight – it takes a lot of practice and hard work. Creating games with Scratch, for example, requires a lot of trial and error. Along the way kids learn that failure is merely a roadblock, and the end result is an awesome game they can proudly share with their friends.
Whether they’re deconstructing a computer and then re-assembling it, or understanding how electrical circuits work through squishy dough, kids develop problem-solving skills and an awareness of their surroundings through coding.
You don’t need to be a rocket scientist or Nobel Laureate to effect change, mama. Start small by building a mobile app to help your friends and family. Saturday Kids student Caleb built a basic app modeled after Uber to help his grandfather find his way to all his grandkids’ schools! Who wouldn’t want their kid to use the littleBits kit to build a hand-held massager for their tired mama?!
A recent Microsoft report found that 72% of girls and young women said it was important for them to have a job that directly helps the world, and over 90% described themselves as creative. We think coding is the perfect fit!
Kids aren’t just learning to code. The design thinking process, the feeling of satisfaction when a code works, and the confidence in presenting that comes with the process of putting together their first project is what will really stick with your kiddo for life (and make them feel like a true rockstar). Along the way they can also work on teamwork and improve their communication skills. Some schools are even starting to consider coding its own foreign language!
It probably doesn’t shock you to hear that kids learn better when they have fun! And coding isn’t just boring numbers and lines of text; instead, coding allows them to
- express their creativity by programming interactive digital posters
- create original music compositions
- build a robot dinosaur to take over the world
- and way more
Perhaps that’s why they say #saturdaykidshavemorefun !
There isn’t just one linear path to coding. From block-based type, to hands-on, to on-screen, there are so many ways to code and learn. It’s ok to break rules – just a little! – and add your own touch.
