All ready to take on the Christmas parties this festive season, mama? Kick things off with your kiddo at Canadian International School Lakeside (CIS)! They’re holding a magical morning of festive fun for all little ones and parents to join. Read on for all the deets and how to RSVP!

Highlights include:

  • Christmas carols and a performance of Aladdin by CIS drama students
  • Christmas-themed arts and crafts activities
  • Meet Santa
  • Tasty festive refreshments
  • A goodie bag for every family
  • A chance to tour CIS

It’s the perfect opportunity to spend time with your little one and discover CIS’s thriving and vibrant primary school arts programme first hand! The Arts programme (which involves music, drama and visual art) plays an integral role in every CIS student’s primary school curriculum. CIS adopts a two-pronged approach to the arts: there’s the curricular or classroom experience, and extracurricular activities for students who wish to advance their learning through music ensembles, choral groups and drama productions.

The programme starts with the school’s youngest learners in kindergarten with subjects taught by their homeroom teacher. From Grade 1 onwards, students have dedicated teachers for each discipline (40 minutes for each subject, every week). CIS’s teaching approach focuses on engaging students in a mix of authentic, hands-on activities covering performance, practical work, composition, research, historical context, design and innovation.

CIS is truly determined to raise connoisseurs of the arts! Students are taught to be be good audience members and are given a unique insight into understanding history and different cultures. Performances are sometimes conducted in another language, such as Mandarin or French. For example, Grade 4 music students are currently learning to sing two traditional songs (one in Hindi and another in Thai)  for their holiday concert in December. Part of this learning process involves students also learning about the Thai and Hindi language and the customs and traditions from where these songs originate.

If you’re worried that your child may not have a particular talent for arts, don’t fret, mama – CIS gives lots of opportunities to students of all abilities, and proudly showcases their work in front of live audiences with school exhibitions, concerts and musicals. Their programme also focuses on developing life skills like independence, self-discipline, concentration, perseverance and teamwork, which are all critical for every student’s future success, regardless of what career they choose or interests they have. To cultivate and develop these skills, activities such as band, choir, and theatre require students to work together, allowing them to learn the importance of sharing responsibility.

Performing live on stage also teaches them that regardless of what happens (on-stage mishaps, stage fright), the show must go on! This way, they learn how to cope and grow with mistakes, persevere, and work around a problem rather than just giving up.

Did we also mention that CIS Lakeside has some of the best amenities to carry out their arts programme? Modern, purpose-built facilities including fully-equipped drama and dance studios, a 500-seat theatre, a black box theatre and music practice rooms, and an audio-visual suite are all ready for kiddos to fully experience and enjoy.
