How ICS Prepares Students for Top Universities
ICS is a fully accredited K4 to Grade 12 international school and the only one in Singapore offering the American curriculum in a warm, nurturing, Christian environment. At ICS academic excellence is one of the core values along with personal excellence, caring community and a Biblical worldview. Students here are nurtured in all of these pillars so that by the time they graduate from Senior Year they are academically and emotionally ready for college or university and life beyond school. ICS shares how they achieve this plus if you’re keen to learn more, sign up for their virtual open house on February 22nd.
What really happens in Senior Year?
Senior year is a critical milestone for students in the American curriculum. As the final year of high school, students are busy preparing for their next steps and at ICS, that means college and university. Students in Senior Year at ICS start attending college virtual tours, get experience in writing personal statements, take the SAT and ACT, and work towards their final year of courses.
It’s not just about academics at ICS as a holistic approach is important to develop well-rounded students here. Students are busy spearheading and leading extracurricular activities on campus or joining athletic teams and competing with peer schools. For example, Student Council is typically led by a senior student at ICS and organises student life events, fundraises for student events, and promotes the ICS school spirit throughout the year. This year’s Student Council President is Senior Aiden Fung, who is also a member of the National Honors Society and Model United Nations! Between daily training sessions, organising meetings with students across the school, and preparing for college, seniors at ICS are adept at managing a busy schedule in a confident, enthusiastic and independent way.
How does a high schooler at ICS prepare for university?
ICS students are paired with a dedicated Academic Counselor who meets with parents and students each year and more frequently in subsequent years. The Academic Counselor, Eric Laug, is an expert when it comes to university admissions and supports students in many ways. Eric helps ensure students stretch themselves with challenging course loads during the high school years and points students to resources to prepare for a successful college application, including extracurriculars, competitions, and internship opportunities. High school students are also given special advisory times where they can work on class assignments, work in peer groups or with teachers, or on their college plans.
By the time students get to university they are already well versed in the level of research, independent work and focus needed. A great example of this is the Senior Thesis Research Project, a capstone research paper and presentation that is required of all graduating seniors. This is an academic paper that involves researching a topic of interest and formulating a thesis and argument using appropriate academic sources.
Where can you go to university with a US High School Diploma? Is it limited to just the US?
You can apply to any accredited college or university with a High School Diploma from ICS. While the majority of graduates have gone to universities in the United States, there is a growing number of students attending top schools in the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, Korea, Japan, and more!
Not only does ICS offer a rigorous American curriculum for all grade levels, in high school, the Advanced Placement program is also offered. This program involves a challenging selection of courses with end-of-year exams provided by the College Board (the makers of the SAT!) that may lead to college credit with high scores.
If you’re interested in learning more about ICS, the American curriculum, and how ICS prepares its students for global universities, check out their next virtual open house on Wednesday 22 February! The topic is “How to Choose the Best International School for Your Child” and will include a live panel discussion led by ICS educators.
