In celebration of International Women’s Day, Lila Sutra will be presenting the worldwide phenomenon that is The Vagina Monologues on 7 and 8 March, mama, and we’re giving away a pair of tickets!

Having debuted in New York City in 1996, The Vagina Monologues has now been translated into 48 languages and performed in 140 countries all over the world. The series of monologues – sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartfelt and painful, always real – are based on interviews playwright Eve Ensler conducted with 200 women about their views on sex, relationships and violence against women.

Each monologue covers an aspect of the feminine experience, including birth, sex, menstruation, rape, orgasm, and much more. The New York Times called it “probably the most important piece of political theatre of the last decade”, which is perhaps why it continues to resonate with audiences the world over through its empowering narrative and unique ability to stimulate thought-provoking discourse on often-taboo subjects. This is what appealed to Erin Chen, the founder of sexual wellness company Lila Sutra.

“Last year’s show sold out within 2 ½ weeks,” she says. “The local community’s enthusiasm surpassed our expectations and showed that, increasingly, there is a demand to have a thoughtful dialogue about sexuality, our body, and all that ‘stuff’ we deem taboo.”

Close to 50 women – both local and expat – applied to be part of the cast, double the number from last year. In fact, this year’s production will feature two casts – one for each evening. Following the performance the audience can look forward to a dialogue session via Q&A with the director and cast.

The Vagina Monologues will do more than just empower women in the audience, too; a portion of proceeds from each ticket will go towards care packages to support rehabilitation efforts for women forced into sex work.

The production will in particular support grassroots outreach efforts across the border in Johor Bahru, under the guidance of the organization Sinar Sofia, which makes weekly trips to the red light district fo provide food, sanitary supplies, and medicine to men and women. Sinar Sofia also runs a temporary shelter centre for drug addicts and those affected with HIV, and provides training for former sex workers to learn new income-generating skills.

A sold-out show equals two months of outreach efforts and will help at least one woman get off the streets of Johor Bahru.
