Great World City might not exactly be the chic-est place in Singapore (though we find ourselves there more often than we might expect, drawn by the heady combination of Cold Storage, Amazonia and Zara), but pop just across the road to new homewares store The Go Down, and discover a veritable treasure trove of trendy homewares.

Though we loathe the word, “curated” (which no Press Release of the last three years can seem to do without), the goodies in The Go-Down are exactly that, hand-picked by owner and interior designer, Audrey Lee. If you’re searching for that indefinable object which will finally complete a room; something that looks like you could have picked it up on your travels to a far-flung land, or inherited it from your mad, but super-stylish aunt, you’ll find it here. From wooden statuettes of indefinable origin, to vintage pottery, silver coasters, feather chandeliers (I DEFY you not to lust after them), orchids, glasses, beach towels, bathroom goodies and much, much more, you’re going to find it hard to walk out of this delightful little spot without digging out your wallet.

GoDown1If the selection of goodies on offer isn’t enough to dazzle you, there are bigger plans afoot for The Go Down apart from the retail element. Part of what makes the shop space cosy and welcoming is that it is arranged around a kitchen island, with coffee and cupcakes or cookies available for free to browsers (though tips are encouraged!). The owners are intending to offer cooking classes on-site, as well as renting out the space for private events.

And the quirky name? Well, historically “godowns” were warehouse spaces in East Asia used for storing goods bound for far-flung locations, which explains the inspiration behind the eclectic selection of wares at The Go Down. And our absolutely favourite thing about The Go Down? Honestly, there are a LOT of reasonably priced goodies on offer – even those fabulous feather pendant lights could technically be called affordable, at just over SGD250…

So what are you waiting for mamas? Get yourself on down to The Go Down! Just one word to the wise, you might have a slightly less “heart in the mouth” visit if you go sans littlies… There are an awful lot of breakable items well in reach of tiny fingers!
