Trend alert! Venice’s bacari (wine bars) have come to Singapore in style with another new opening – this time it’s &SONS at China Square Central… and it’s the perfect spot for a decadent date night with your beloved.
Drinks wise it’s all Italian liquors and cocktails, like the Bassanova… a mix of Nardini 50’, Amaretto and lemon ($15), with wines from Italy at near retail prices (from $7 a glass!) all designed by restaurateur, Beppe De Vito (who your may know from the success story that is Il Lido).
As per the Venetian tradition of pairing your tipple with a delizioso biteor two, there’s hot and cold small plates on offer to share.The music is pumping at &Sons Bacaro, so sit alfresco if you’d prefer to natter with your date, or be prepared to get right in on the action inside. Pull up a bar stool at their gastrobar or sit in the dining room alongside their salumi and prosciutto curing room (they are the only place in town to make their own cured meats on site). While you check out the menu, order a platter of their Italian artisanal cheeses ($18). It’s loaded with cheeses like the Ubriaco – a ‘drunken cheese’ bathed in red wine — and creamy nutty Fontina… and whatever you do mama, don’t miss their truffle pecorino. It’s a winner.
For the small plates, there’s burrata and asparagus cream ($15), charcoal grilled wagyu beef with salsa verde ($26) and hyper-ventilatingly good baccala cakes with sea urchin sabayon ($13). When we visited we fell in love with the vibrant green homemade pumpkin tortelli with crispy capers and avocado ($8). Though portions are small (all the better for ordering the gamut), heavier items on the menu include the Paccheri with Iberico pork and truffle ($15).
A stones throw from the Central Business District – the suited and booted can slip here after work for an early glass of vino and a nibble or two before going on for that late drinks “meeting”. Almost makes me want an office job again (almost). For the rest of us, &Sons Bar is one to put on the must-visit list for the perfect date night.
