Like most families, mine has a rhythm to our weekends and like most parents, we are usually looking for activities that are relaxing for us as adults whilst also being interesting for the kids. Most weekend mornings start with various exercise or sport activities, but once we are all feeling energised (and somewhat virtuous!) our next stop is always coffee and a treat.

Our favourite weekend haunt for this is Tiong Bahru, and our hands down favourite café is Plain Vanilla Bakery at the start of Yong Siak Street (heads up mama, they’ve also got a Holland Village location!). Aside from the most delicious cupcakes and bakery treats with equally superb coffee, there is a small area with toys for the kids and a much sought after swing. The café sometimes hosts small pop up events and provides a space for local brands to showcase their wares, and I have often found very beautiful and interesting items there.

Recently, Plain Vanilla Bakery has partnered with ‘Superhero Me’, a wonderfully inspiring children’s festival designed to develop a stronger sense of self, build resilience and instill confidence in children.

Children are invited to get crafty and create their own superhero costume using everyday household items with the help of their parents, providing an opportunity for children and adults to bond. They are asked to consider what kind of superpowers their superhero will have, and how they will be used, with a focus on the values of kindness, respect, gratitude, patience and resilience.

For the next couple of days, you can pop into Plain Vanilla Bakery to bond with your children and create your own ‘Superhero Me’ costume.

The festival will culminate this weekend on Saturday 27 June when children and adults alike, are invited to a ‘Heroes Gathering Party’ at the National Library, dressed in their self made Superhero Me costumes.
