My Little Pony: A New Generation

An all-new generation of ponies

The new animation film My Little Pony: A New Generation opens with discord in Equestria  – the magic is gone and Earth Ponies, Unicorns, and Pegasi are no longer friends. But it’s not long before Earth Pony Sunny (voiced by Vanessa Hudgens) is on a mission to restore enchantment and unity. Most of the Earth Ponies run when, gasp, a unicorn shows up, but Sunny bucks the trend and instead makes a new friend in Unicorn Izzy (voiced by Kimiko Glenn). Together they travel to faraway lands meeting Pegasi Pipp (Sofia Carson), Zipp (Liza Koshy) and Earth Pony Hitch (James Marsden). Each creature possesses its own unique gifts and differences that make them sparkle – and together they just might have what it takes to restore magic to Equestria.

Fun music, lots of colour and positive messaging

What us mamas thought: I remember My Little Pony from my childhood, but this version is super fresh with underlying themes of girl squad power (yass!), inclusion, exploring one’s identity, friendship, and kindness, while single parenting is represented here too. The songs were fun and upbeat, we had a few chuckles at the jokes and overall we thought the show has some great uplifting messages and talking points for girls and boys regardless of age.

What our kids thought: ‘I liked it! Can we watch it again?’ ‘The ponies weren’t friends at first but were in the end so that was good. The ponies that were not kind learned to become nice. I liked Izzy’s long hair and the rainbow hair.’ ‘This is my new favourite movie!’
