Let’s be honest mamas, haven’t you always wanted children that speak in tongues? Do you have angels at home who are blessedly multilingual but you are unsure how to support and encourage them? Salvation might come in the form of the Canadian International School’s (CIS) language seminar: ‘Chinese and Multilingualism: Equipping your Child for Success’. Renowned for its innovative Chinese bilingual programme and emphasis on language, the CIS is offering this free seminar in November.
Keynote speakers Professor Helena Curtain and Huali Xiong will present on the advantages of raising children fluent in Chinese and other world languages in the 21st century. The seminar aims to equip parents with the practical skills to support and encourage your multilingual child(ren).
Just who are these language-evangelists? Professor Helena Curtain is an internationally-renowned expert on second language teaching methodology, curriculum development and bilingual and immersion education. She has directed the English as a Second Language and World Language teacher preparation programmes at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for ten years.
She also co-authored the book ‘Languages and Children: Making the Match’ that is now in its fourth edition and used in universities throughout the US to prepare language teachers from Kindergarden to 8th grade. Helena has helped develop and coordinate language curriculum around the world including Chinese, Japanese, French and Spanish programmes.
Huali Xiong is the Head of Chinese at CIS, which pioneered and is now expanding its successful Chinese bilingual programme. She is originally from China but also holds an MSc in Education from the State University of New York. A true bridge builder, she has over 30 years’ experience teaching English to Chinese people and Chinese to foreigners.

CIS and other leading schools around the world structure their entire primary Chinese curriculum around this programme.
The seminar will conclude with a presentation using examples from Huali’s Chinese teaching experiences, plus proven teaching methodologies that YOU can use to help your child become multilingual, mama!
