LOVE, NILS is a Singapore-based charity to support families with kids who are suffering from cancer. Here’s what they do and how you might be able to help.
If the unthinkable happened and your child was diagnosed with cancer, how would you respond? This is a story about a mama who dealt with the tragic loss of her own son, but used her grief and pain to help other families in Singapore dealing with childhood cancer.
LOVE, NILS is a Singapore-registered charity that provides children suffering from cancer and their caregivers with healthcare guidance, emotional care, and social and community support. Lesli Berggren, an American mother who has been living in Singapore since 1998, founded LOVE, NILS in 2017, after her 14-year-old son very sadly lost his battle with cancer.
Lesli Berggren’s son, Nils, was diagnosed with a rare form of stage 4 lymphoma when he was 13 years old. Lesli spent the next 18 months caring for her Nils as he received medical treatment both in Singapore and the United States. Miraculously, Nils beat cancer following treatment at Singapore’s National University Hospital. However, a few months later, complications arising from a stem cell transplant tragically led to his passing. Lesli lost her son and her 14-year-old daughter had lost her twin brother.
Throughout his battle, Nils maintained his positivity and fighting spirit. He spent time writing letters to family and friends asking for prayers and strength. He always signed off as “Love, Nils.” Today, LOVE, NILS stands to embody the hope he showed, supporting other children and their families as they navigate their treatment process. Led by Lesli, the team work tirelessly to be a beacon of hope and resilience for paediatric cancer patients and their caregivers in Singapore.
What can you do to help?
LOVE, NILS is planning a fun-filled ‘anti-gala,’ Super Hero Benefit on Saturday 16 November, to raise money to support children battling cancer and their caregivers. This isn’t your standard posh black-tie charity gala; instead, grab your jeans and put on a Super Hero Cape (provided by LOVE, NILS), and get ready for a fun-filled evening of food, drinks, music, games, and auction (bagsy the Como Shambala Bali week stay!), plus insightful talks by Lesli to raise awareness for their charity work.

How does LOVE, NILS help children battling cancer?
Last year LOVE, NILS raised $140,000 to fund Singapore’s first ever Care Coordinator for children with cancer at NUH’s paediatric oncology department. This worthwhile program helps families not just survive, but thrive throughout their difficult journey by guiding them through their entire cancer treatment. This year, LOVE, NILS aims to raise $300,000 to expand the Care Coordinator program, fund a range of non-traditional therapies that can influence healing (like yoga, art therapy and meditation), expand toy donations, provide free tickets to musical concerts to patients, establish pen pals, and more. All proceeds from the benefit will go directly towards this cause – so your help and support will be much appreciated and get right to the people who need it.
If you want to help to do something to help families whose children are suffering, then please help now. Grab some friends and buy tickets to this fun fundraiser or if you can’t make it, then why not donate?
