Seventh Generation manages to combine effective cleaning with an eco-friendly ethos and value-for-money prices. Our Senior Editor explains why she loves it…
You might be surprised to know how many messages we get from readers asking for our recommendations for the best laundry detergents and household cleaning products. The struggle is real when it comes to finding stuff that actually works, while also being mindful of harmful chemicals that we want our little ones to avoid (we’re happy to avoid them, too!).
After nearly a decade in Singapore, and having had the opportunity to try out all sorts of products, Seventh Generation is my go-to for laundry detergent, dish soap and more. I’ve yet to find another brand that manages to combine safety and green-mindedness with actual effectiveness. It’s not the cheapest product on the market (it’s also not the most expensive), but it’s great value and a product I feel good about using for my family. It’s literally a “Safer Choice,” too, as Seventh Generation was one of the first companies to participate in the voluntary Safer Choice government initiative in the U.S., where products undergo rigorous independent testing to ensure that their ingredients are safe and free of harmful chemicals. Seventh Generation is one of the few eco-friendly brands in Singapore to carry this certification.
The story behind the name is a cool one: it’s inspired by a Native American document that states “in our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.” A company that’s dedicated to making the Earth a better place for our children and their children (and their children…) is AOK in my book!
Read on for more on why we love Seventh Generation…
Plant-Based Ingredients and No Nasties
Seventh Generation’s laundry detergent is 97% plant-based, totally free of dyes and synthetic fragrances and brighteners, and perfect for my baby’s sensitive skin. We particularly love the Free & Clear range, as well as the Lavender Fabric Softener, which smells divine (and is sourced from real botanicals and essential oils). I am pretty much obsessed with all of Seventh Generation’s Free & Clear products, which are hypoallergenic and dermatologically tested to be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
I also love that Seventh Generation products are free of nasties like Triclosan and phospates. Bear in mind, mamas, that ingredients disclosure generally isn’t even mandatory for laundry and household care products, but Seventh Generation has taken the lead in disclosing everything right there on the packaging anyway, because they’ve got nothing to hide! As aforementioned, they’re a voluntary adherent to the EPA’s strident “Safer Choice” standards, too!
No Animal Testing and a Commitment to Sustainable Palm Oil
Seventh Generation has never done any animal testing, dating back to its founding in 1988, and in fact is listed in PETA’s database of companies that don’t test on animals and whose products are not based on animal ingredients. Plus, they’ve been a member of the Leaping Bunny Program since all the way back in 1999. It’s an independent, third-party auditor and the cruelty-free standard from the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC) that provides the best assurance that no animal testing is used in any phase of product development by the company or on its behalf.
As palm oil is a major concern in our part of the world, mamas will be happy to know that the company is also a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), which is dedicated to promoting the sustainable production of palm oil worldwide and bringing only certified sustainable palm oil to the marketplace.
Recycled Packaging: They Walk the Walk
Seventh Generation is an industry leader in its use of post-consumer recycled plastic, as reducing waste and creating sustainable packaging is at the core of their mission to preserving the Earth for the next seven generations. The company strives to reuse, recycle, and re-purpose recycled materials such as newspaper and cardboard wherever possible, all with the goal of minimising the use of virgin plastic.
In fact, Seventh Generation has a goal for 100% of its products and packaging to be made using biobased or post-consumer recycled content by 2020!
Dish Soap & Every Other Kind of Cleaner to Keep Your House Sparkling
With Singapore’s weather demanding rigorous daily cleanings, and the fact that many small apartments don’t have the space for dishwashers, Seventh Generation’s full suite of cleaning products – including dish soap, all-purpose cleaner, and cleaners for wood, glass and bathroom surfaces – are a godsend. Just as I don’t want nasties on my baby’s skin, I don’t want them on my eating surfaces, either! And like the laundry detergent, Seventh Generation’s dishwashing liquid has no dyes or synthetic fragrances.
Whether you’re scrubbing the floor or washing your hands, it’s worth bearing in mind that your skin is likely to come into contact with these cleaning products. Stay safe and avoid the nasties, mamas!
Yet another thing I love about Seventh Generation is that it’s widely available across Singapore. You can find the dishwashing and laundry products at supermarkets like FairPrice (online and select locations), Cold Storage, and RedMart. I highly suggest checking it out if you’re on the hunt for safe, effective products that are doing their best to not harm the environment, mama!
During the month of August, you can actually get a 10% discount off Seventh Generation products when you purchase on RedMart. Click here for details!
