Come celebrate Outdoor Classroom Day on 18 May, a worldwide celebration of all that’s wonderful about outdoor learning (and the Outdoor Discovery Centre at CIS in particular!)

The benefits of outdoor education are myriad, mama: from sharpening brain development, to boosting gross motor skills and promoting teamwork and creativity, there’s very little downside – yet we’re often shocked at how little outdoor time kiddos get here in balmy Singapore.

That is so not the case at Canadian International School (CIS), which is pioneering outdoor learning here in Singapore with its amazing Outdoor Discovery Centres (ODC) at both its Jurong Lakeside and Tanjong Katong campuses. At Tanjong Katong, in fact, Kindergarten classrooms actually open directly onto the ODC; filled with all sorts of textures, sounds and smells unique to the outdoors, it’s very much an extension of the indoor classroom.

Held at the Tanjong Katong campus on the East Coast, Outdoor Classroom Day on 18 May is the perfect opportunity for parents to find out more about why outdoor learning is so important for kids, what it looks like at CIS, and why their outdoor learning environments are so special! Throughout the morning there will be lots of fun and educational outdoor activities for young children, including:

  • Playtime in the mud kitchen (perfect for grasping simple math concepts like volume, weight and size)
  • Painting like Michelangelo along the roof and sides of the tunnels
  • Creating different art forms using natural materials found throughout the centre

Meanwhile, older kids can learn about

  • Math fractions using nature (e.g. create a plant where ¾ of the leaves are green)
  • Plant biology (such as the stem, leaves, and so on) through drawing and observation
  • Energy and its importance via experiments like designing small boats and testing them on water using wind energy

CIS’s school leadership team will be on hand to give campus tours and answer any questions parents might have about their outdoor learning programme, play-based Kindergarten and Primary School curriculum. And of course yummy light refreshments will be served as well to keep little tummies from rumbling!

So come find out why outdoor learning is an integral part of the CIS approach to balanced education; you’ll be amazed to see how your little ones respond to this unique and stimulating natural environment, mama!
