If you’re looking for something different to do with the kiddos on a Sunday morning (and you don’t really fancy the kids making a mess in your own kitchen — good intentions aside) then bundle them out the door and drop past The Grandstand for some happy times at Slappy Cakes!

New to the fam-friendly dining scene in Singapore, Slappy Cakes is all about cooking your own pancakes. A simple concept that really delivers in its fun factor for kids, little ones sit up to the table and help mama to cook their own hotcakes.

Located inside of Modern Asian Diner (MAD), Slappy Cakes is designed so that each table has its own griddle pan as its centerpiece. The pan is switched on when you are seated (you’ll need to keep a close eye on the teeny tinies, the pan gets really hot and unless bubs is sitting at the end of the table, is easily within reaching distance for little fingers) and a menu placed firmly in your hands to help you choose your pancake flavour combo!

On the morning we went, our 3 year old was a little under the weather so my husband and I had full control over exactly which type of pancakes we wanted. We ended up choosing (the rather safe) combinations of Buttermilk Pancakes with Blueberries and Mango Jam and Peanut Butter Pancakes with Chocolate Chips and Maple Syrup. Of course, you can choose any weird or wonderful combo you or the kids like!

The menu is broken down into three steps:

  1. Pancake Batter Flavour – choose from wholegrain or buttermilk, peanut butter, chocolate or even zucchini flavour!
  2. Choose your add-ons – blueberries, raspberries, choc chips, sprinkles — you name it, you can probably whack it on your pancake while it cooks.
  3. Toppings – choose sweet (different flavoured jams, maple syrup or lemon curd) or savoury (brie cheese, bacon, or pork sausage).

The pancake batter is delivered in these really cool squeezy bottles (no mess around here) that are super easy for little ones to help squirt onto the griddle. Add-ons and toppings come in cute little silver bowls so are perfect for small hands to help dish out.

Once you’ve decided on your flavours, it’s time to cook! Squeeze your batter onto the non-stick griddle, sprinkle on your add-ons and let them cook! Huge spatulas are provided and are the perfect size for munchkins to help flip the pancakes.

For now the menu only serves pancakes (there’s plenty of coffees available for caffeine-starved parents) so the hardest choice will be what type of pancakes you fancy. The p’cakes we cooked were light and fluffy (I preferred the buttermilk pancakes over the peanut butter ones) and the two ‘tubes’ of batter were more than enough for my husband and I (the 3 year old wasn’t feeling well enough to eat unfortunately!).

Slappy Cakes makes for a fun morning out with the fam. It’s definitely a little bit different from our normal brunch go-to spots but is a great way to encourage the sprogs to help out with a bit more cooking at home!
