New Singapore Brunch with kids: Violet Oon's Kitchen

violetoonsAt Sassy Mama we’re always on the hunt for new fam-friendly brunch options in Singapore! The trifecta of brunch awesomeness basically boils down to:

1) Opens early — Singapore restos, how does a meal served at 12.30pm count as brunch exactly? That is LUNCH people. Parents with little kiddos have been up since dawn!

2) Yummy food which comes quickly

3) A casual, kid-friendly atmosphere — highchairs, chilled-out staff, a kid’s menu… It doesn’t take much to make a mama happy.

BIG BREAKFASTYou want to know the new kid on the block who is really hitting it out of the park on all the above? Bukit Timah babe, Violet Oon’s Kitchen. Matriarch and eponymous Violet is a grandma herself, and the whole restaurant is a family affair, with friendly daughter Su-lyn (soon to be mama of three!) and son Tay Yiming managing the place. We bowled in on a busy Sunday morning with a little gang of marauding munchkins, and found ourselves welcomed with open arms, even though we had little crawlers on the floor and made a big old mess with pieces of food dropped from highchairs.

The vibe at Violet Oon’s Kitchen is elegant but low-key (we adore the trad black and white colour scheme and tiled floor). There’s outdoor seating for those who like to dine al fresco, or bag a table inside to enjoy the air con. We kicked off with some strong coffees (for mama!) and fresh juices for the kids while perusing the menu.

SPICY VIETNAMESE PULLED PORK BURRITOThe eclectic brunch selection has something for everyone to choose from (there’s soooo much more than egg ‘n bacon on offer here!). Inspired by the travels and university experiences of Violet and her children, you can see how the influences of Los Angeles, the UK and Sydney come into play with the fun array of different dishes. Dads will love tucking into the hearty Breakfast Burritos (try the Vietnamese pulled pork version) and if you’re looking for a dish with a bit of local flavour, the Asian Big Breakfast is a treat for your taste-buds, comprising Nasi Kuning, Sambal Telor and finger-licking Chicken Wings. There’s Muesli with Fresh Fruit if you’re watching your waistline, and if you’ve got a sweet tooth, the French toast with Banana and Coconut Milk is gooey and amazing (we’re still dreaming about it weeks after the fact).

LOCAL BIG BREAKFAST (1)And the kids’ menu? Well, our littlies were jonesing for sausage and toast so we ended up mostly ordering up a bunch of “sides” to satisfy their cravings, but we did try the Cheese and Tomato Quesadillas from the offerings for juniors and they were a hit! We’ll definitely be back — this creative, fun and laid-back brunch option is a new Sassy Mama favourite!

Violet Oon’s Kitchen Weekend Brunch is available on Saturdays and Sundays from 9.30 am to 3 pm. The Regular menu is also available from 11.30am to 3pm for lunch on weekends.
