Teach Kids Singapore History with Who, What, Why LKY!

Want to teach your kids more about Singapore’s founder Lee Kuan Yew (LKY), but unsure where to start? Check out this fab new website and activity pack that teaches kids the amazing Singapore Story!

It’s certainly been a year of celebration for Singapore, but the death of founding father Lee Kuan Yew in March also added a touch of bittersweet to the festivities. For older generations of Singaporeans who experienced firsthand the radical transformation Singapore underwent during his decades of leadership, there was much about his lifetime to appreciate and celebrate, but what about kids born after he’d retired from public life?

In part to process their own grief, and in part to share LKY’s tremendous achievements in an understandable way with their children, an enterprising group of mamas got together to create a pro-bono website and downloadable activity pack called Who? What? Why? LKY. An introduction to the life and work of Singapore’s founding prime minister, it aims to explain to children who Lee Kuan Yew was, and why he mattered.

LKY4

Though originally conceived as a simple print-out explaining LKY’s life and contributions, the project evolved into a broader initiative ultimately comprising 10 chapters that tell key parts of the Singapore story — 25 amazing pages in all! With simple text and cheerful illustrations by Singaporean artist Jorraine Lim, the activity pack launched on August 9 and is easily downloadable and printable right from home.

LKY2

Geared toward children aged 5 to 9, Who? What? Why? LKY includes fun activities like colouring sheets, an historical timeline, a draw-the-flag page, a connect-the-dots SMRT map, and much more. Kids can quiz each other on their knowledge of Malay, Mandarin and Tamil, or use the print-out nature guide to identify iconic Singapore trees in the park. It’s a truly comprehensive celebration of everything that makes Singapore a wonderful and unique place to live.

LKY5

The final chapter asks kids to consider what they envision for Singapore in the next 50 years, and families are encouraged to share their filled out pages on Who? What? Why? LKY’s Facebook and Instagram pages with the hashtag #WhoWhatWhyLKY. The project will be formally launched with a party and workshop on September 5 to introduce the activity pack to kids and parents. Together with these brilliant mamas, kids and families across Singapore can all help make 50 look fabulous!
