"Even though I was happy I could support my children in their needs, there were many times I felt empty. Here I was, looking after other people’s kids. I showered them, cooked for them, played with them. I even slept with them every night. From morning until it was morning again I would be there for those kids, even later when they started going to playgroup. My employer asked me to teach them how to count, and how to spell the alphabet. I taught them with love and responsibility. But then I realised that I never had the chance to do all those things for my own kids. I missed all those precious moments." As we celebrate Mother’s Day, do remember there are many mothers in Singapore who are far from their children. We hear from Indonesian mama and FDW Novia Arluma, who had to leave her 6-year-old son and 1.5-year-old daughter behind in Indonesia when she came to work in Singapore. More in our link in bio. "27 years ago I became a mother. I was 18 years old, back in the days before social media and parenting communities... It was a strange thing: being old enough to carry and care for a child, but still years away from being old enough to drink alcohol or go out dancing. Being old enough to pay bills and rent and have responsibility for a human being, but not being old enough to be listened to or respected as a parent. I didn’t have the life experience or maturity to demand any of it, but I sure felt entitled to it and like I had all the answers. Like most teenagers.⁠
It was hard. ⁠
It was rewarding. ⁠
It was messy, it was beautiful and it was lonely."⁠

Tomorrow is Mother's Day! Here's to recognising and thanking you for all the amazing things you do - the nights spent looking after sick kids, the days spent worrying about your little ones (are they eating enough, are they making good friends, are they sleeping enough - the worries never cease!), the school drop-offs and after school ferrying, the lunch-box packing and meal cooking. This mum job is hard work - but we wouldn't change it for the world! ⁠

Bed shortages, lack of oxygen supplies and rapid testing kits, overcrowded hospitals, and overflowing crematoriums and graveyards are just some of the devastating effects of the second wave of Covid-19 infections that are currently plaguing India. According to Unicef, the second wave of Covid-19 in India is “almost four times the size of the first wave”, and hospitals and healthcare centres are struggling to cope. India is reporting a high number of new cases – these continue to stay above 300,000 daily and are among the world’s highest at the moment – and the country’s top health experts are speculating that the numbers could, in fact, be higher than the official figures being released to international media. Many charitable organisations, private businesses and non-governmental organisations are raising funds to donate medical supplies, oxygen tanks and other vital necessities. Not sure where to look? "Dear Husband,⁠
Last night you came into the kids’ room during our bedtime reading asking where the adhesive tape was as you couldn’t find it in the drawer where we usually keep it. I told you it was on the kids’ bookshelf. You took the tape while muttering in annoyance, “Can we just put things back where they are supposed to be?” Well, I wish to explain why I hadn’t returned the adhesive tape to where it was supposed to be.⁠

You see, after the usual morning rush to get our son ready for the school bus picking him up at 630am for primary school and after you had rushed off for work, I heard a wail from our daughter’s room when I was filling her water bottle and getting her pre-school uniform while in-between bites and gulps of my toast and lukewarm coffee. I ran to investigate and found her distraught over her favourite book (which she had intended to take to school today) that had come apart. I took the adhesive tape from the drawer and mended the book. We were running late, but I had her dress and use the toilet, then packed her book and water bottle and drove her to her pre-school.⁠
⁠
When I came home, I worked on my laptop for an hour while sipping the now cold coffee...."⁠
