'One of the most memorable experiences was our life-changing climbing adventure to Nepal which was not without its share of challenges. The one significant obstacle we encountered was the scepticism and reluctance of travel agencies to help us since my daughter was only four years old at that time. They felt Sumayyah was too young to appreciate the experience and that she might become cranky or pose a hindrance to the trek.

Undeterred, we continued our search and met an agency that was willing to help us plan the trek to accommodate our family’s needs. They tailored our itinerary to be child-friendly and provided us with an experienced guide, Lakhpa, a porter Katarman and Sureen.

Our journey to Nepal made Sumayyah more resilient and adaptable than we could have imagined, it also allowed her to develop a deep appreciation for nature and respect for others. Her giggles and curiosity became integral to the trip, drawing smiles and warmth from both fellow trekkers and locals we encountered along the way.

Last year, our family returned to Nepal to tackle the Everest Base Camp trek. Sumayyah was sixteen and she proved her resilience once more, surpassing our expectations to reach the Everest Base Camp after conquering her O-Levels.

We started introducing Sumayyah to adventures at a young age. Before she took her Junior Open Waters at 10 years old, we had already been introducing her to the ocean since she was a baby because it offered a rich sensory environment. When she could swim, we thought that diving could be a good progression.

As an educator, I advocate for a well-balanced life. Both my husband and I believe that the outdoor teaches valuable life skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and adaptability. These skills can be applied in all aspects of life, including work and personal relationships.."

Eugh, it's back! Here are 6 things you need to know about the haze (for our full article click the link in bio):⁠

1. Exposure to particulate matter from haze may cause irritation to your eyes, nose and throat, plus you may start sneezing and coughing when the PM 2.5 approaches “unhealthy” levels (for a full explanation of haze readings click our link in bio). ⁠
⁠
2. PSI stands for Pollutant Standards Index, and gives an indication of air quality based on the 24-hour average of PM2.5 concentration levels among other pollutants. The 1-hour PM2.5 levels, however, provide an indication of the current air quality and it’s these particles that you have to worry about

3. To reduce your family’s exposure to air pollution you should minimise the time you spend outdoors (and avoid strenuous physical activity outdoors) when the PM2.5 is Unhealthy for All.⁠
⁠
4. If the haze gets bad, close windows to reduce haze particles entering your home. Drink lots of water to help flush your body of the residuals from the haze. Wet-clean your home (mopping) to help remove settled dust particles.⁠
⁠
5. Use air-conditioners to improve air circulation. Turn on portable air purifiers, especially with highly efficient filters, such as High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters to clean the indoor air.⁠
⁠
6. Surgical masks do not provide adequate protection from haze. N95 masks are best however a lot of respiratory effort is needed to breathe through these masks. Young children, some elderly people, people with severe lung disease, breathing problems, heart disease or stroke, and pregnant women in their 2nd and 3rd trimesters should not wear N95 masks unless advised by their doctor. N95 masks are not needed for short exposure, like commuting from home to school or work in an indoor environment.⁠
