Maggie & Rose – a brilliant family members’ club started in London in 2007 – is finally coming to Singapore, mamas!

For anyone who’s missed Tanderra since it closed a couple years ago, we’ve got great news: Maggie & Rose is coming to Singapore, with their first location opening up at Dempsey Hill in early 2019! We’ve long been envious of our sisters in Hong Kong, where they already have two fab family clubhouses.

We have a feeling former London and Hong Kong mamas are doing a little happy dance right now – there’s actually been a worldwide movement to open up more clubs with the popular hashtag #everywhereneedsamaggieandrose !

Geared toward families with younger children (generally babies up through 9 or 10), Maggie & Rose clubs provide beautiful, creative spaces for children including a Play and Learn drop-off programme along with all sorts of unique camps and classes for littlies (classes start at 6 months for babies, while camps are for school-aged children from about 4 to 7). Meanwhile, parents have a cool and stylish place to kick back with delicious food and coffee, all in the lush surrounds of Dempsey. They’ve partnered up with the fashionistas at kids21 so you just know it’ll be fabulous.

Maggie & Rose will be open seven days a week, with their delicious, signature “family menu” (no separate kids’ menu here, thank you very much!) available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We hear Sundays are very popular with families…wonder why?

The exact location is still being kept under wraps, but we do know that there will be more than 5,000 square feet of indoor space for art, cooking and music classes; dedicated Play and Learn drop-off programme for kiddos from 18 months onwards; soft play and music classes for babies from as young as 6 months; and both indoor and outdoor dining options.

The gorgeous outside space, meanwhile, will feature a big kids’ play area with climbing frames, yoga and mindfulness pavilions for both parents and kids, and additional outdoor classroom space. In contrast to the UK and Hong Kong clubs, the Singapore location will have more activities geared toward parents, including exercise classes, a co-working space (hooray!), and expert talks. It’s all about creating a home away from home feel, mama!

Mama of four Maggie Bolger got the idea for the club when she found herself with three children all under the age of 6 — and nowhere she could take them to have fun that would also be even remotely comfortable and enjoyable for parents, too.

As she told Sassy Mama Hong Kong in 2015:

“I kept thinking, I can’t be the only person feeling like I used to live a relatively cool life, feeling like I could go to nice places to then suddenly having kids and going ‘Is this it? Play gyms, dirty church halls and coffee shops?’ All the nice places would give you a funny look if you tried to hang out there all day, and you had to order an expensive lunch just to justify being in that sort of place. So I just waited and nobody did it. And then I thought, I’ve just gotta do it.

maggie & rose family club kids classes

She started with art classes, then gradually added cooking classes and music classes. Their Jackson Pollock-inspired Splat! class – in which the walls and floor are covered in canvas and kiddos and parents just go to town with paint – remains one of their most popular. The cool vibe continues with other kids’ art classes inspired by the likes of Picasso and Banksy. They also put all on sorts of cool birthday parties!

Maggie & Rose has grown so popular in the UK that they have their own in-house team of designers; rather than the flashing lights and garish primary colours you might find at a lot of indoor playgrounds, it’s all rustic wood, natural light, and a hip Farrow & Ball colour palette. Even their play structures are designed in-house to meet strict EU safety standards, and are then shipped here to Asia.

Maggie & Rose has also developed its own accredited teaching curriculum, with team members from the UK coming out to Asia to personally train the staff in Singapore, so you know you and your kiddos will be in good hands, mama. Take a quick look at their own line of art supplies, toys, homewares and children’s books and you just know it’s a place where you will want to be!

How it works (and how much will it cost?)

Fees are not set in stone yet, but membership looks to be capped at 200-300 families to start out, with tiered price levels based on how many classes per month are included. Families will also be issued guest passes to bring along friends and their kiddos. Classes are only open to members, while holiday camps and birthday parties will be open to everyone (with lower prices for members). Classes are capped at 8-10 students – ensuring plenty of personal attention and a chilled out vibe.

We hear they’ll be revealing more details (including the exact location) in the coming weeks, mama, so watch this space. Let the countdown begin!
