Family friendly dining and a great brunch at Horse City in Bukit Timah
Listen up mamas, there’s a brand new Bukit Timah restaurant that we promise you’re going to absolutely love! Tin Hill Social (Tin Hill is the literal translation of Bukit Timah into English) at Horse City (off Turf Club Road) has taken over the space where Picotin used to be, and transformed the former stables into an enormous, multi-purpose space that works for all sorts of occasions and times of day.
From the main indoor dining area with its vaulted ceilings, banquet seating and much-appreciated air-con, the restaurant flows through a casual outdoor shady terrace surrounded by greenery with a mixture of high-top and regular tables. There’s a large outdoor bar area decorated with hipster murals, wall-mounted televisions for catching up on the latest sports and a secret little candlelit bar which would be perfect for private cocktail parties.
The food at Tin Hill Social is a mix of quality Western comfort food faves for brunch and lunch, with some yummy salads and tasting platters thrown in. The concept is food that’s perfect for sharing, to reflect the casual and convivial atmosphere of the decor. We tried a large selection of the brunch dishes, and were impressed by the Gypsy Eggs in particular (two eggs cooked sunny side up and roasted potatoes in a rich, tangy tomato sauce).
We also liked that the brunch menu included a hearty Greek Salad (portions are generous) so we could attempt to be healthy! It wouldn’t have been something I was naturally drawn towards on the menu, but the friendly manager, David, suggested we try the Seafood Platter, with a mix of cured seafood served with some nutty pumpernickel bread, and it was delicious.
Slightly less impressive is the kids’ menu, which lacks any healthy options (please, oh please restaurant industry step up your game!), and has a set menu format including a juice and ice cream. While the pizza in particular is sure to please the littles, we’d recommend ordering from the main menu instead and sharing family-style. The Peas with Pancetta side dish is the perfect veggie option for picky eaters as it’s so fantastically bacon-y.
Service was excellent on both of our visits, despite still being newly-opened, and waiters were both friendly and had a good knowledge of the menu. We didn’t try it ourselves on our visits as it felt a little early in the day, but Tin Hill Social is one of the few places in Singapore which serves a traditional Pimms Cup cocktail (a mixture of Pimms and Lemonade with various floating summer fruit) — the ultimate trad British summer drink. We’re planning to come back for this treat perhaps sans kids next time!
If you’re looking for a fab option for eating with your family at any time of day, an events space, or a chilled out date night with the hubby, you can’t go wrong with Tin Hill Social. Our only concern is that we almost can’t bear to let the word out as this place is sure to become a Bukit Timah institution.
