Never settle for boring nail polish ever again, mama – create your own bespoke shade

Finding the perfect nail polish shade is much like looking for the perfect lipstick or foundation, don’t you agree, mama? It’s gotta match your skin, look incredibly flattering and warrant many a compliment. So when Nail Deck invited me to create my own custom nail polish colour, I had to check it out!

Call it far-fetched, but when I first heard of the service I immediately imagined a Build-a-Bear type of process (and if you don’t know how that works, watch this – but make sure there are no kids in sight to avoid demands to head to the nearest workshop), with separate stations to pick your colour, finish and accessories. In its early stages at the moment, it has a more DIY feel and looks more like this.

The first of its kind, Nail Deck started when company CEO Daryl Chew, a nail polish importer and distributor, found that many of his customers wanted even more specific shades than the ones he already had in stock. The need to make shades to suit everyone’s tastes resulted in his partnership with chemical engineer JJ Wong, and the rest is history. The Nail Deck pop-up is now located within esBoudoir nail parlour at VivoCity, where I popped in to create my perfect shade!

The whole process was so quick, I was in and out in 20 minutes – and that’s only because I was eagerly chatting up the founders long after my nail polish was complete. How you go about this is up to you. You can come prepared with a picture of the shade you want to recreate, or like me, come with a general idea in mind and let JJ surprise you. I wanted a mid-tone blue which, though it took 3 tries to get right (all the samples are complimentary, and you can try them out on your nails with their disposable brushes), only took about 10 minutes before the bottle was tightly sealed, labelled and packed in a cute bag for me.

Did I mention you can also name your own nail polish shade?! My current obsession is Solange Knowles’s latest album, so naturally her name was the first thing that popped into my mind. The only available finish right now is cream, but glossy, metallic and glitter finishes are just some that are still in the works.

It’s a fresh and fab idea for gifts (Christmas is coming, after all…), or a quick and fun way for you to bond with your little girl making the perfect polish! If you can’t physically make it down to the Lacquer Bar, you’ll be thrilled to know they also offer this service online and on their Nail Deck app. Simply pick between a 5ml ($11) and 10ml ($16) and have it delivered right to your doorstep.

Nail Deck pop-up is now open till 31 December 2016 at esBoudoir, 1 Harbour Front Walk, #02-227 VivoCity, Singapore 098585.
