Find out more about one of the largest Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) programs in Singapore!
As much as we sing the praises of academics and learning and brilliant teachers (and there is plenty of that to sing about in Singapore, mama!), sometimes it’s nice to take a step back and look at all the fun kids can have with Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs).
International schools in Singapore are obviously known for their gorgeous campuses and myriad learning opportunities; German European School Singapore (GESS) stands out from the crowd by offering a whopping 85 CCAs per week for students from Kindergarten through Grade 12 – placing it among the most comprehensive CCA programs of all the international schools in Singapore!
Let’s start with the benefits of CCAs: besides being a great way to blow off steam, they’re perfect for learning lifelong skills that carry students well beyond the classroom. For instance, GESS offers a cool woodworking class that gives students practical knowledge on how to build and construct items with wood. In Fun with Fabrics, similarly, students learn how to create their own garments and household items for use in everyday life.
Another cool aspect of CCAs at GESS is that they’re cross-sectional, meaning they bring together students from the school’s two curriculums, the English-speaking IB curriculum and the German curriculum. It’s a great way to not only discover new passions and hobbies, but to make new friends across the wider school community.
What’s more, many of GESS’s CCAs give students the opportunity to get involved in school events, whether it’s the Jazz Band, Choir or Orchestra performing at the annual Christmas Bazaar or Summer Party, or various drama performances.
CCAs also comprise sports that aren’t offered on teams or through the school’s PE lessons, such as Taekwando and Krav Maga. What a cool thing to get to try…at school!
GESS’s many CCA programs span the following categories, mama:
- Sports: includes football, swimming, badminton, golf, tennis, mini yoga and Taekwondo
- Performing Arts (Music and Dance): includes jazz dance, theatre workshop, circus, musical/choir production, string ensemble, theatre technical support, theatre hair and makeup, theatre backstage, rock and pop band
- Language, Arts and Culture: includes Chinese language and culture, art/woodwork, junior Picasso, arts and crafts
- Science and Technology: includes robotics, design technology, podcasting, coding, film and photography club, computer programming, aviators club
- Skills and Lifestyle: Model United Nations, cooking, outdoor survival and conservation skills, fun with fabrics, traditional art skills, magnificent painting
Another cool feature is that GESS partially subsidizes CCA fees for students.
Jealous, mama? Maybe you don’t have to be. GESS actually welcomes students from other schools to join its CCAs, provided there’s space available. How amazing is that?! Find out more about GESS and its CCA program at their next Open Classroom Day happening on March 9, 2017 from 10am-11:30am. Watch, listen and learn while observing vibrant student-teacher interactions, and gain insights from the school’s successful approach to learning.
