Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre presents: CNY Family Fun 2019

Gear up early to welcome the Year of the Pig as the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) presents CNY Family Fun 2019 with a slew of exciting programmes for families to prepare for the upcoming festive season. Held over 12 & 13 January 2019, one can uncover the traditions and practices behind the Spring Festival, usher in the new year with their very own terrarium and yarn art display or collect a limited-edition red packet designed by local illustrator Ah Guo with an original song by composer-pianist Peng Chi Sheng, specially commissioned by SCCC for the season.

Lost: The Mystery Case of Cai Shen Ye

An unknown evil threatens the prosperity of the new year and has kidnapped the God of Fortune (Cai Shen Ye)! In order to keep his powers from being stolen, the God of Fortune sealed them away in a gold tael and hid it somewhere. However, the mystery villain created seven replicas of the God of Fortune and now there are 8 of them wandering the realms of Hell, Earth and Heaven! You will need to find the real God of Fortune, restore his powers with the gold tael and discover the nature of the evil that threatens him.

So Much Fun – Ah Guo Exhibition

Step into a world of Ah Guo’s colourful illustration that will appeal to the young and the old! Ah Guo is the featured artist for SCCC’s first ‘singing red packet’.

Step into Ah Guo’s world of colourful illustration and be touched by the warmth and authenticity of his art. As the illustrator of the SCCC’s limited-edition red packets this year, Ah Guo will also hold a sharing session about his works on 12 Jan as well as an interactive storytelling session on 13 Jan, both held at 2pm in the SCCC Gallery.

Upcycled Craft Making Workshop

Create your own yarn art piece and make yourself a nice tissue pouch or a container night light this Chinese New Year by attending these TERRA SG-run fun workshops. They are the perfect hands-on sessions for making creative reuse craft.

Upcycled Pallet Board Yarn Art: 10am, 11am, 2.30pm, 3.15pm

Gather up your recyclables as TERRA SG is also doing a collection drive on the day as well! Items such as milk & juice paper cartons, 2L plastic bottles, small PET bottles, disused t-shirts and short and round glass jars are being called for collection.

Lion Dance Crash Course

Pair up with a friend or family member to learn the ropes from Feng Yi Dragon and Lion Dance Entertainment troupe. Take in the basics before proceeding to appreciate its art form and the joy of seamless teamwork with your partner. Suitable for ages 7 and above.

“Let Us Celebrate Chinese New Year!” Interactive Session

Do you know any Chinese New Year stories? Do you know any Chinese New Year traditions and customs? Do you know any Chinese New Year greetings to say to friends and relatives? Come together for an interactive session to hear stories, sing songs, learn CNY greetings and play games with educators from Han Culture and Education Group.

Lyrics Writing and Music Recording Workshop

Welcome to this 3-hour workshop where you will learn to rewrite SCCC’s specially commissioned The Lo Hei Song. Trainers from Intune Music will share some basic literary techniques like the 4W1H, and also explain the relationship between lyrics and music. In turn, participants will share their memories and experience of CNY and brainstorm for lyrics that best suit The Lo He Song. To top it all, at the end of the workshop, you will have a chance to record your rewritten lyrics into your own New Year Song!

Paint ‘N’ Play Ocarina Parent-Child Workshop

Ocarina is one of the best “musical tools” to promote family bonding as its small size enables both adults and children to play it. Come 13 Jan, this Ocarina parent-child workshop will teach you how to play and paint on this instrument.

Additionally, this workshop which is specially designed for first-timers, will introduce you to Ocarina’s history as well as give you the opportunity to perform with the musicians on stage.

Healthy Bento Making Workshop
12 Jan 2019 | 12.30pm – 1.30pm | SCCC Resource Centre, Level 6 | Tickets at $12 in groups of 4 from Eventbrite.

The instructor will share tips for healthy living and eating and to identify various lifestyle illnesses and discuss their causes such as whether sugar is the culprit of obesity. Upon understanding the meaning of “healthy”, participants will break into groups of four and create their own bento with imagination and flair. Participants are encouraged to form groups of 4 to attend this workshop.

Shrink Art Workshop

Witness the magical transformation of plastic sheet into hardened plastic art. After the workshop, you can attach your plastic artwork to a keychain and turn it into a functional accessory.

Terrarium Workshop

One of the easiest plants to manage, the terrarium will add a dash of greenery to your home for this Chinese New Year.

Zentangle Drawing Workshop
