To commemorate Singapore’s bicentennial year, Gardens by the Bay has lined up diverse activities to celebrate National Day. Starting with the Orchid Extravaganza – ‘Our SingaPop’ Edition floral display in Flower Dome, this year’s orchid showcase was put together under the creative direction of Dick Lee, and designed by costume designer Yang Derong. A celebration of Singapore’s pop culture, it will feature icons and landmarks that reflect Singapore’s unique blend of tradition and modernity.
Then on two weekends in August, two areas of the outdoor gardens will come to life with the Legends of Singapore series. Using puppets and with live music accompaniment, actors will enact The Scourge of the Swordfish – the story of how Bukit Merah got its name – and The Friendly Snake.
Over the National Day weekend, the two-day Gardens by the Bay and Mediacorp National Day Concert will take place at The Meadow. The free concert features acts such as Kit Chan, Dick Lee, Rahimah Rahim, Jasmine Sokko, Kumar, Aisyah Aziz and Fakkah Fuzz. President Halimah Yacob is the guest of honour on the first day.

Watch as two legendary fables from Singapore come alive in the heart of the gardens. In The Scourge of the Swordfish, a quiet fishing village comes under attack by ferocious swordfish. Can anyone save them from these fierce creatures of the sea? In The Friendly Snake, a beautiful friendship is formed between a little girl and a snake, but as their friendship grows, the village’s livestock begin to mysteriously disappear. Could it be the snake?
