Sassy Mama Celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2015

Family LifePost Category - Family LifeFamily Life

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, mama! Here’s what you can do to help in Singapore.

If things have started looking extra rosy to you lately, mama, it’s not the haze finally getting to you: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month worldwide. While that definitely means you can expect to be surrounded by lots of pink stuff over the next 30 days (not that we don’t love pink here at Sassy Mama), it also means there are tonnes of great initiatives going on across Singapore to raise both funds and awareness about this disease that affects so many women around the world. (As the daughter and granddaughter of Breast Cancer survivors, it’s certainly a cause near and dear to my heart. –Ed.)

According to the Singapore Cancer Society, Breast Cancer is the #1 cancer killer of Singaporean women, and 1 in 11 women here will get Breast Cancer in their lifetimes, with numbers steadily on the rise.

One of the keys to survival is early detection (including both self-exams and mammograms), and to that end women age 40 and above who are Singaporean citizens or PRs can get $25 off a mammogram screening island-wide if they make an appointment by 31 October (screenings can be done anytime through 31 January, 2016). Click here for eligibility info and to download the free voucher, mama. Even if you yourself don’t qualify, we bet you know someone who does, so pass this valuable info along!

Want to know what else you can do to help raise Breast Cancer awareness? We’ve rounded up a list of events and fundraising initiatives across Singapore to keep you abreast (sorry, couldn’t help it) of goings on this month.

The Pink Ribbon Walk & Carnival
This annual event – a 3.2km walk around Marina Bay – is happening tomorrow mama but they accept walk-up registrations! You’ll not only be showing your support for survivors, you’ll also be raising funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation, which runs amazing support groups and programmes for Breast Cancer patients and does awareness outreach throughout the year. Be sure to wear pink!

When: Saturday 3 October (tomorrow!), 5pm
Where: Marina Bay Event Square (between Marina Bay Promenade and Marina Bay Shoppes)
How much: $35-$45

Public Forum: How Far Are You from the Number One Female Cancer?
Presented by the National Cancer Centre Singapore, this free expert talk (available in both Mandarin and English) will let you know how to recognise risk factors and symptoms and will also cover detection and treatment options. We know it can be scary and unpleasant to think about, but it’s good to be informed, mama!

When: Saturday 3 October, 9.15-10.30am (Mandarin) / 11.15am-12.30pm (English)
Where: NCCS Peter and Mary Fu Auditorium, Level 4, 11 Hospital Drive, Singapore 169610

Public Forum: Breast Cancer Hair and Skin
Run by the National University Cancer Institute of Singapore, this free talk for patients and their supporters will cover how to cope with Breast Cancer and treatment along with looking and feeling your best! A team of medical and beauty experts will discuss how to handle hair and skin changes during cancer therapy (including handy make-up demos and how to get creative with a scarf!), and the event will be capped off by a showing of Cancer Hair, a short film shown for the first time in Singapore.

When: Saturday 24 October, 9.30am-12pm
Where: NUHS Tower Block, T01-01, Level 1, 1 E Kent Ridge Road, Singapore 119228

Pink Hair for Hope
Couture salon Hairdreams wants to help you show your support for Breast Cancer Awareness month with its “Pink Hair for Hope hair creation package”, which includes application of pink stripes to your hair, wash, blow dry and subsequent removal. The package costs $80, with 20% of proceeds donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation, but women who make a $500 donation will receive the “Pink Hair for Hope” hair creation for free. They’ll also have a pop-up salon tent at the Pink Ribbon Walk on 3 October!

If pink’s not your colour, mama, consider making a donation to a charity that supports medical research or current cancer patients, including the Breast Cancer Foundation, the Singapore Cancer Society, or the National Cancer Centre Singapore’s Research and Community Cancer Funds. We are so close to beating Breast Cancer, but we’re not there yet!

Do we have a treat in store for you over the coming weeks, mamas!
Meet Ms.Yin and Ms.Yang, fashionista mamas based in Singapore that bring two distinct perspectives on how to dress in ‘The Tropics’. Their passion is discovering local brands and shops, from high street to high-end, from day to night, and all the glitzy bits in between – they will have you covered mamas!
Ms.Yin - aka Sabrina Sikora @sabrinasikora - is the darker city side with a love for luxe but a knack for mixing local labels into the look. She prefers black and white with interesting shapes and textures and is always boldly accessorised to the max. Add a red lip, a fab bag, and a flashy shoe and she’s out the door in eight minutes flat. You have to be quick when you have two kids!
Ms.Yang - aka Katie Kay @instantgoddess - is the light and bright lady with a tropical vibe. A self-confessed jewel junkie and fashion fanatic, she loves bold prints and bright colours, and is always on the lookout for baubles and fash for less cash. She daydreams of lounging poolside looking glam with a glass of champers in her well accessorised, perfectly manicured hand, but in reality she’s running around after a mini 7-year-old diva, fretting over the next showdown with Mr.Yang about the credit card bill after all that online shoppa-shop the night before, and always thinking “suck in” if she ever does make it poolside!
@msyinmsyang will be giving us some styling tips and sharing their wisdom on how to keep looking tiptop in the Tropics in the weeks to come!
