Hot Foodie Happenings at Singapore Food Festival 2018: STREAT and Sentosa Grillfest

Calling all foodies! Are you getting psyched for three weeks of feasting at Singapore Food Festival 2018?

Happening from 13 – 29 July, the Singapore Food Festival (SFF) returns for its 25th edition this July with the theme “Savour Singapore in Every Bite” to celebrate Singaporean food heritage. From a four hands pop up restaurant by Michelin Starred Chef Emmanuel Stroobant (one star Saint-Pierre) and Chef Haikal Johari (one star Alma) – where 5 courses will cost a mere $60 -to a STREAT Bar by Manhattan, kueh workshops, a Big Fat Indian Wedding feast, Park Bench collabs for rendang sarnies to a beach Grillfest at Sentosa and more!

The Singapore Food Festival takes place in various locations across Singapore from 13 to 29 July 2018 – that’s three weeks of feasting! We’ll be munching our way through the delicious goodies available in Singapore from heritage foods Old Chang Kee’s curry puffs to the ‘modern’ Love Local Campaign by McDonald’s (we hear it is durian themed!), to art inspired dishes like the frankly delicious Nyonya Otah scotch egg at A Samsui love Story: A Food & Dance Affair by Project Plait x Tung Lok, where theatre and food tell a story together.

The signature event of the Singapore Food Festival is STREAT, a two-day long outdoor event, which will feature an exciting collaboration between local culinary talents. The main draw is the four-hands pop-up restaurant helmed collaboratively by Chef Emmanuel Stroobant (from one Michelin-starred Saint Pierre) and Chef Haikal Johari (from one Michelin-starred Alma).

In addition, an exciting line-up of hawkers and chefs will also be serving up traditional and modern takes on Singaporean classics which are bound to excite local and visiting foodies.

For the first time, a dedicated bar will be set up at STREAT, helmed by Manhattan, which was recently awarded Asia’s Best Bar 2018. Beers launched exclusively in conjunction with SFF will also be retailed by Trouble Brewing. Plus look out for local souvenirs at STREAT’s retail pop-up, local entertainment acts, workshops and masterclasses…

Sentosa Beach will be transformed into a massive food fest street over three weekends. Complete with live music and performances. Sentosa’s eateries and second-generation hawkers will be offering up Jumbo Prawn Hokkien Noodles and old school Calamansi with sour plum and Salted Egg Chicken Waffles at Sentosa Grillfest.

Stroll back in time to the 1930’s with the 50 Cents Fest at Chinatown Food Street.

From as little as 50 cents, savour authentic 1930s dishes including Kerabu Bee Hoon (tossed rice vermicelli), Fish Moilee (lightly spiced creamy fish curry dish) and Kopi Gu You (butter caramelised black coffee) and other long-lost ethnic dishes from the colonial days! Did you know that butter coffee was invented to give labourers an energy boost (and supposedly soothe the throats of opium smokers too!).
Kids will love the delicious Banana Balls!

Performances
Watch street entertainment acts such as Taxi Girl and traditional opera, or walk down the streets of the 1930s (virtually) with a one-of-a-kind virtual reality installation, at this immersive, interactive and fun event of endless nostalgia.

Singapore Restaurant Festival is the collective force of 60 restaurant brands islandwide all set to bring diners a dining experience to remember with their incredible range of cuisines. Watch out for special dishes like Steamed Pork Patty with Salted Fish from Gold Leaf, Majestic Roast Chicken from Moi Lum and Crispy Fried Chicken with Eight Treasure Chestnut & Glutinuous Rice Stuffing from Di Wei Teochew Restaurant. Other participating heritage restaurants include Fatty Weng, Omar Shariff and Yum Cha in the month of July.

For the first time ever, Singapore Restaurant Festival will also be introducing the SRF 2018 Rewards Card. Accumulate six stamps at participating restaurants and stand a chance to win attractive dining vouchers in monthly lucky draws!

1. Park Bench Deli Collaborations. 
   Sandwich virtuoso Park Bench Deli will be collaborating with the popular Roast Paradise hawker stall  (15 July) and Rumah Makan Minang (29 July) to come up with unique Singaporean sandwiches combining western buns/bread and Asian fillings from roast char siew and Char Siew Bossam, to beef rendang and nasi padang sandwiches. 2. A Samsui Love Story: A Food & Dance Affair by Project Plait X Tung Lok (17 – 20 July) – pictured.
   In this food-meets-dance affair, a 5-course modern Singaporean meal is interwoven with contemporary dance into a unique showcase by Chef Nixon Low and choreographer Naomi Tan. More here.

3. LoveSG at Changi Airport (13 July to 29 July).
   Various eateries in Changi Airport, including Krispy Kreme and Paradise Dynasty, will be pushing out locally inspired dishes.
4. Curry Day 2018 (27 to 28 July, 11am to 9pm).
   Old Chang Kee will be offering curry dishes and snacks including a special curry puff launched for Singapore Food Festival 2018 at Velocity@Novena Square’s Indoor Atrium (Level 1). Customers can also check out curry cooking demonstrations and more.
5. Street Food of India (27 to 29 July, 4pm to 10pm).
   This outdoor event at Campbell Lane (opposite Indian Heritage Centre) will showcase classic Indian street food such as bhel and pau wada.
6. A Taste of Eurasian Heritage (15 July, 21-22 July, 29 July, 11am to 1:30pm).
   This event involves a tour of the Eurasian Heritage Centre, followed by a cooking demonstration on corned beef cutlets by Chef Quentin Pereira of Quentin’s Eurasian Restaurant. Participants will get to tuck into a Eurasian bento that comes with curry debal, prawn bostador and corned beef cutlets with rice and sambal belachan. There will also be a sale of Eurasian craftwork. 7. Back To Basics – Savour Your Heritage Kuehs (14 July, 21 July, 27 July).
   Learn how to make traditional kueh at three local producers’ farms or factory. Find out more
8. Beer Yoga & Citylights (13 July, 20 July, 27 July, 7pm to 8pm, 8pm to 9pm). Organised by District 1 Yoga, this event pairs the philosophies of yoga together with beer. At $29, you’ll get to enjoy a bottle of limited-edition Singapore Food Festival-branded beer by Trouble Brewing during the class. Yoga mats and towels are not provided. Register here.
9. Celebrating Food Films and Local Cuisine by Screening Room 13 – 29 July.

10. Singapore Food Festival at AccorHotels (13 to 29 July). AccorHotels’ properties like Fairmont Singapore and Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa to name a few, will each prepare a line-up of mouth-watering dishes which pay tribute to local favourites – think Hokkien prawn noodle soup, to Laksa seafood Paella.
