Tiny Bites: Brussels Sprouts at Big Splash

There’s nothing quite like pulling up a table at a casual laid back restaurant, with a calming sea view, and space for kids to move around to feel like the weekend has really started. So when we finally made it out to the East Coast on a recent slow Saturday afternoon for a meal with our 4-year-old we knew we were in for a treat.

Located on East Coast Park, Brussels Sprouts is the epitome of kid-friendly dining, with everything a mama needs to enjoy a pleasant meal with her family — namely, a huge outdoor play area for active big kids and a small indoor play area for the younger ones. The big attraction here food-wise is Belgian beer and mussels (hurrah!) and while the menu is heavily swayed towards seafood, there’s still plenty of meat dishes and side salads available for order.

Thumbs up: The biggest drawing card for us was the fact that our son’s meal came out quickly, had the option to add salad instead of fries (huge selling point in our book!) and was the perfect size for him. He opted for the sausages and salad and was happy to chow down before exploring the children’s play areas — another winner! There was also a roaming balloon sculptor who was happy to keep kids entertained by making any number of balloon creations (we spied a balloon Elmo) and on weekends and public holidays kids under 10 years eat free*!

Thumbs down: We know this is going to make us sound rather old, but the noise factor was a bit of a downer for us. The music was blaring when we went so there was a fair degree of yelling involved to be able to have a conversation. While the music worked wonders in drowning out the squeals of excitement that emanated from the children’s play area, it wasn’t exactly conducive to a quiet conversation (but that’s not why you go on a Saturday afternoon… right?).

Kids menu: Yep — while it’s not super creative by any means, it does met the need for kid approved food served in reasonable portions. Choose from pasta, ham, meatballs, sausages, or fish sticks — all with the option to add either salad or fries on the side — and you’ll have one happy camper on your hands.

Highchairs: Only our favourites — those super sturdy wooden highchairs that can handle anything from dropped spaghetti to smooshed up veggies and only take a second for the waiters to wipe down.

Stroller access: Absolutely! Enter through the car park entrance and you’ll able to stroll right in with your babe in pram — there’s no stairs to contend with either. There’s also oodles of space inside to park the stroller, although if you sit on the side of the resto nearest to the beach, your pram may end up in the way of kiddos who bound up and down towards the play area!
