Sassy Scoop: What makes Blue House special?

ExpertsPost Category - ExpertsExpertsLearnPost Category - LearnLearn - Post Category - SchoolsSchools

Tucked away down a leafy Bukit Timah road is the gorgeous Blue House Nursery & International School. Horses are put through their paces in the paddock opposite, birds call from the trees, mamas gather in the cosy on-site (wi-fi and caffeine equipped!) ‘Pantry’ and the sounds of children playing in the shaded garden and sandpits fill the air. But, what truly makes Blue House special isn’t how beautiful and charming the environment is (though don’t doubt for a second, it’s totally intentional!) but their unique educational approach practiced via a Reggio Emilia inspired curriculum.

What is Reggio Emilia? Well, it’s a child-led, teacher-framed, enquiry based approach to learning initially pioneered in the small Italian village of the same name post World War II when the community was inspired to rebuild schools based on the principles of respect, responsibility and community through exploration and discovery in a supportive and enriching environment. Fast-forward 60 years, and the Reggio Emilia approach is thriving across the globe to international acclaim, and in Singapore is showcased at one of the very best in the region at Blue House!

What does this mean for Blue House ‘families’ then? Well, a love for learning is encouraged with exposure to recycled, open-ended, real-life materials through an enquiry and project based approach and children are supported to set their own path to knowledge. But that doesn’t mean kiddos won’t meet standard educational milestones – just that they follow a more engaging, provocative and individual path to learning, guided by highly trained and supportive observers (educators!). Blue House classrooms intentionally look a little different to “regular” school rooms…You’ll be amazed how homely and welcoming they are set with interesting activities and materials just beckoning to be explored! Classrooms are painstakingly set and re-set daily as an invitation to children to wonder and discover with the previous days activities often re-visited, re-worked and re-questioned.

0598At Blue House (and in Reggio) they’re about creating a true community; parents are considered a highly important part of the learning process, continually invited to get involved in different projects, and kept informed on their kiddos’ progress with daily online journals that can be shared with friends and family around the world (great news for the expats amongst us!). Knowing exactly what your child did at school that day helps you to keep the learning going at home as well as stimulating conversation with your littlies!

Blue House offers 2, 3 and 5 day Nursery, Pre-School and Kindergarten programs for children aged 18 months to 6 years, alongside a range of enrichment classes covering Mandarin, Music and Drama for example. If you’d like to experience Blue House, we recommend booking a school tour (hosted by the School Director or Assistant School director personally!) or even booking a trial class at the 2000 sq ft Infant & Toddler Atelier where tinies from 6 – 36 months can explore, discover, imagine, create and wonder!

Blue House is truly a special place for children in their most critical ‘early learning years’ in a nurturing, open, intentional environment — find out more by visiting their website or emailing [email protected].
