There’s nothing quite like handing the kids a brush and seeing what happens next. Better still is when you do it at an organised class you don’t have to cover your whole apartment in plastic sheeting! Check out these top spots for mini art-lovers in the Little Red Dot – you might even get something to hang on the wall!

Abrakadoodle

Focusing mostly on smaller kids, Abrakadoodle has three sweetly named ‘Doodler’ groups for mini Picassos and also offers camps and birthday parties in addition to their weekly art classes. All their classes focus on teaching youngsters about colour, texture and tone in a variety of mediums, including paint, sculpture and design. The website itself has a great games page – we dare you not to have a quick doodle yourself mama while you make your child’s booking!

Art Boot Camp

With themed programmes across three different sites (Bukit Timah, Alexandra and the East Coast), Art Boot Camp caters for kids between 18 months to 17 years and offers experiences that encourage interactions with the environment. Each of their art studio’s has been designed to reflect this goal. Smalls can begin with Art Playdate classes, where each parent-tot combo can get stuck into some one-of-a-kind creativity, while older ones will learn about painting and drawing techniques, colour theory, perspective and many other art themes in their own drop-off classes!

Little Artists

Employing the very thorough ‘Palette of Teaching’ and catering for children aged 2.5 to 17 years, programmes at Little Artists are split into different levels according to age and ability, and also include workshops and talks in some classes. Junior artists are exposed to sketching, painting, craft, clay, and creative art, using various mediums and materials. Special needs groups get a look-in here too and like their other programmes, are individualised according to the child’s needs.

The art people

The Art People

A methodical, structured approach to learning about creativity is behind all the classes at The Art People. Kids in small groups (some as small as 1:4) can take art classes that cover basic drawing, toddler art, stop gap animation, computer animation and game design and development. Three locations in S’pore, classes for special needs kids and certificates handed out at the end of each module make this a well-rounded option.

Mo Lawson 2London-born Morwenna Lawson moved to Singapore one year ago with her husband and son. Formerly a magazine copy editor on homes, travel and consumer titles, she now writes and blogs and is still trying to complete the novel she always promised herself she’d write! Over the last 12 months she has tried her best to max out the passport, sung in a choir, dipped her toe in an aquafit class, taken up running and very much enjoyed taking in this warm new life under the palms. She hopes year two will be a little quieter but knows (and is secretly be pleased) that it won’t be. You can read about her life on the Red Dot here.
